R290 Air Conditioners
Why R290 systems perform better and consume less power than R32 systems
1. Superior thermodynamic properties of R290
R290 is a natural refrigerant with a very high latent heat of vaporization and better thermal conductivity than R32.
The result: more cooling capacity per kilogram of refrigerant.
2. Lower operating pressures
R290 operates at significantly lower pressures.
This reduces the compressor’s pressure ratio, which means:
– lower power consumption
– lower winding temperatures
– lower mechanical losses
3. Better part-load efficiency (inverter)
Inverter air conditioners operate mostly at part load.
R290 maintains a high COP at low compressor speeds, unlike R32.
4. Smaller refrigerant charge
The smaller mass reduces losses and friction and improves the system’s dynamic response.
5. Better heat transfer in the heat exchangers
R290 has a higher heat transfer coefficient.
The same heat exchanger delivers more watts.
6. Lower discharge temperature
R290 results in lower discharge temperatures at the compressor.
This increases efficiency and service life.
7. Environmental factor
GWP:
R290 = 3
R32 = 675
Will R290 replace R32 in the future?
The market is gradually shifting toward natural refrigerants with extremely low GWP, such as R290, driven by new European regulations and energy efficiency requirements.
